Bruns House, Alamo CA

Bruns House, opened in 2004, is the first freestanding adult hospice facility in the East Bay. The House accommodates acutely ill patients in comfortable, medically appropriate, private rooms. Patients experience privacy and quiet that cannot be achieved in a hospital, and intensive around-the-clock care that cannot be achieved at home. Families and friends of patients enjoy the opportunity to visit Bruns House whenever they like and to carry on activities that are meaningful for the patients. The house has been the scene of many family reunions, three marriage ceremonies, a naturalization ceremony, many birthday and anniversary parties, and countless happy moments that patients have spent with their beloved pets.

A Memorial Garden, featuring English roses, was designed and planted by Dr. Anne Steinmann, a hospice doctor at Bruns House.   In 2009, Diablo Women's Garden Club was asked to help supplement the plantings in the garden.  The Club suggested perennials for easy care and members planted butterfly bushes, geraniums, starchy, veronica and other plants to complement the garden.  This sensory garden provides a lovely, secluded respite for patients and their families.
